I was going through my books trying to decide which to let go. I'm in a process of freeing myself from the bondage of material goods. (More on this later.)
I came across a small paper pamphlet of poems by Ernest Hemingway that was originally published in Paris, but was, in this instance, a pirated edition published in 1960 in San Francisco. I'm not sure where I found it or how long I've had it.
Collected Poems
The poems are mostly bad; early work published in Germany or France in the 1920s. Some I like. This one was published by Der Querschnitt in February, 1925.
The Age Demanded
The age demanded that we sing
and cut away our tongue.
The age demanded that we flow
and hammered in the bung.
The age demanded that we dance
and jammed us into iron pants.
And in the end the age was handed
the sort of shit that it demanded.
